Recently released after completing a five-year prison sentence and arriving in Miami on July 18, 2026, Otero Alc\u00e1ntara will join audiences for a post-screening conversation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The film examines the intersection of contemporary art, civic engagement, and freedom of expression, presenting the story of an artist whose work became closely connected to recent Cuban history.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Presented by ArtesMiami<\/strong>, the program is made possible with support from ONE Sotheby\u2019s International Realty, the CINTAS Foundation, Tere Shelton Bernace, and Drs. Ernesto and Malena Erdmann.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The screening will take place on the\u00a0<strong>anniversary of El Maleconazo<\/strong>, the spontaneous anti-government uprising that erupted in Havana on August 5, 1994, and became the largest anti-government protest in Cuba since 1959.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luis Manuel Otero Alc\u00e1ntara: Estamos conectados is the opening program of Persecuted: Artists Censored by Communist Cuba, a two-part documentary series by Ernesto Fundora examining the lives of Otero Alc\u00e1ntara and writer Jos\u00e9 Lezama Lima, two influential cultural figures whose work became the target of state censorship in different periods of Cuban history. Both documentaries will be presented with English subtitles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coral Gables Museum is dedicated to celebrating the civic arts and cultural heritage of Coral Gables and South Florida. Through exhibitions, educational initiatives, and community programs, the museum fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of the built andnatural environments that shape our region. ArtesMiami is a 501(c)3 organization founded in 1995 by Dr. Aida Levitan, It supports and promotes Miami artists and cultural organizations.
