Ivonne speaks about her work:
"I would tend to say that my first love affair was with a crayon and a white piece of paper.  Ever since I can remember, picking up a pen, crayon or colored pencil and letting my brain waver with thoughts superf

Yogi Box

Wood box, carved and painted. Yogi boxes came after a weekly yoga class that I started taking about six months ago.  I was so inspired by the way the instructor closes the class, and a big part of it is the tonal quality of her voice, she always states “there is nothing to add, nothing to substract, you are perfect”.  What a mantra for a pseudo perturbed Cuban.  I came home and created the little yogi. Soon I was giving him/her/it away to friends and placing it on top of small boxes with inspirational quotes. So, in honor of my yoga instructor, the illustrious Rhonda, I bring you, the Yogi Box.  Each box is hand carved, you will notice that all lines are composed of dots, I am still currently teaching myself how to use the tool.  It has a nasty habit of getting a tad bit hot and my small digits take quick offense. The figures are created in clay, baked, glossed and placed on the box after the box has been stained.  Depending on the size of the piece this can take anywhere from 5 hours to a day or two.

Convergencia, a new poetry book by Judit Arvesu

Editorial Ultramar, the publishing division of ArtesMiami, Inc., has just published "Convergencia," a poetry book by Judit Arvesu, who arrived in Miami from Cuba in 2012. Persecuted by the Castro regime for defending human rights, Arvesu is a talented poet whose book has been praised by writer Regis Iglesias:

"These 60 poems condense the essence of the poet, in her direct and melancholic style, and the expression of a whole generation silenced for too long. They are a burst of desire, hope and desperation; they are love and darkness, but, above all, they are passion...they are honest and softly penetrating verses."

ArtesMiami president Dr. Aida Levitan and the book's editor, writer and poetJanisset Rivero, presented the book and a reading by Arvesu on Monday, June 6th at the Coral Gables Books and Books, before an audience of more than 50 cultural leaders, including the Consul General of Spain, Candido Creis, and cultural columnist Olga Connor. The Luyano Band played New Age music while the author read. "Convergencia" is available for sale at Books & Books, 265 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables, for $15. Books & Books will donate a portion of the proceeds of the book to ArtesMiami and the organization, in turn, will donate its own proceeds from the sale of books to the poet.
