Editorial Ultramar Renamed Editorial ArtesMiami
December 19, 2019
With the December 2019 publication of the poetry collection La floresta interminable: poetas de Miami, the hitherto known Editorial Ultramar assumes a new name, Editorial ArtesMiami, which unifies it with the parent institution that sponsors it: ArtesMiami, Inc.
It is not the first time that Dr. Aida Levitan, Ph.D., founder and president of the organization that supports and promotes Hispanic artists and cultural organizations, makes changes in her institution. In 1995, Dr. Levitan created Hispanic Events, Inc., to produce the Fair of Seville in Miami and the Fair of Spain. A decade later the organization was renamed ArtesMiami, Inc. It then created a publishing division, named Editorial Ultramar, and published several books by leading Miami Hispanic poets. The new name Editorial ArtesMiami maintains the same commitment to publish the work of new and established poets who reside in Miami.
Among the books published under the Editorial Ultramar label were: Poesía viva by Rodrigo de la Luz (2003), La ciudad de la unidad posible, anthology of 32 poets (2009), Hialeah Haikus (in Spanglish) by Alex H. Fumero and Marco Ramírez, with the voices of young poets (2009), In 2011 The City of Possible Unity was published in English. Mio mundo and La luz que se prolonga, by Rodrigo de la Luz (respectively in 2010 and 2012), Convergencia by Judit Arvesu (2012), Testigo de la noche by Jenisset Rivero (2014), El silencio y la furia by Lilliam Moro (2017), and Jungle Fables/Poemas de la Jungla, in English and Spanish by Gustavo Novoa (2018). With its new name, Editorial ArtesMiami recently published La floresta interminable: poetas de Miami, a poetry collection in Spanish under the care of Luis de la Paz in December 2019.
The ArtesMiami, Inc. institution, through its president and other donors, makes donations totaling $100,000 in cash and in-kind services to cultural and artistic institutions and periodically awards the ArtesMiami Lydia Cabrera Award, recognizing those who have contributed to the development of South Florida as a cultural center. Among those who have been honored with the award are Gloria Leal, Luis de la Paz, Carlos Alberto Montaner, Olga Connor, Nat Chediak and Mitchell Kaplan.
