Yogi Box

Wood box, carved and painted. Yogi boxes came after a weekly yoga class that I started taking about six months ago.  I was so inspired by the way the instructor closes the class, and a big part of it is the tonal quality of her voice, she always states “there is nothing to add, nothing to substract, you are perfect”.  What a mantra for a pseudo perturbed Cuban.  I came home and created the little yogi. Soon I was giving him/her/it away to friends and placing it on top of small boxes with inspirational quotes. So, in honor of my yoga instructor, the illustrious Rhonda, I bring you, the Yogi Box.  Each box is hand carved, you will notice that all lines are composed of dots, I am still currently teaching myself how to use the tool.  It has a nasty habit of getting a tad bit hot and my small digits take quick offense. The figures are created in clay, baked, glossed and placed on the box after the box has been stained.  Depending on the size of the piece this can take anywhere from 5 hours to a day or two.

Cecilia Valdés is a Cuban zarzuela based on the novel by Cirilo Villaverde. It is a work of importance for its quality, and its revelation of the interaction of classes and races in Havana, Cuba. The story takes place in colonial Cuba around 1830. The young and beautiful mestiza, Cecilia Valdés, is the illegitimate daughter of the powerful land magnate and slave trader, Cándido de Gamboa. Leonardo de Gamboa is his legitimate son. Leonardo falls in love with Cecilia, not realizing that she is his own half-sister, and they become lovers. At the same time, a poor black musician, José Dolores Pimienta, is also hopelessly in love with Cecilia. Cecilia rejects Pimenta's advances and conceives Leonardo's son.

However, the love between Leonardo and Cecilia does not last. He leaves her and becomes engaged to an upper-class white woman, Isabel Ilincheta. Cecilia turns to the faithful Pimienta to plan revenge. On their wedding day, Leonardo is assassinated on the steps of the Cathedral by Pimienta, who acts at Cecilia's instigation. Pimienta is executed and Cecilia imprisoned.
